AOL Time Warner Drops Plan to Sell Book Division

Media and publishing giant AOL Time Warner (AOLTW) has decided to drop the sale of its book publishing division after the company failed to find an attractive bid, as reported by Reuters. "Frankly, we didn't receive an offer that reflected the true value of the asset," AOLTW spokeswoman Tricia Primrose told Reuters. The news was announced to company employees on Thursday, June 5.

A recent study conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics declared San Francisco as the leader in book sales per capita. The San Francisco Chronicle quoted a San Francisco bookseller as saying she sold architecture and fine cookbooks but couldn't make a living selling cheap romance novels. The retailing industry in the U.S. and Canada is in the process of aligning itself with the rest of the world in a standard approach to product identification. The Uniform Code Council (UCC) has established January 1, 2005, as 2005 Sunrise, the date for general retailing in the U.S. and Canada to have the capability to scan, store, and process not only the 12-digit UPC code currently in use, but also the EAN/UCC 13-symbol code used in the rest of the world.
