NRF Urges Passage of Internet Sales Tax Bill

On December 6, a witness testifying on behalf of the National Retail Federation urged a congressional committee to approve sales tax simplification legislation (The Sales Tax Fairness and Simplification Act of 2007, H.R. 3396) that would make it easier to require Internet merchants, mail-order houses, and other "remote sellers" to collect sales tax across state lines.

An American Bookseller on Assignment in Iraq

Shelby Monroe, a bookseller at The Village Bookstore in Pleasantville, New York, is heading to Iraq this month as a reporter for two small-town newspapers. This will be her second trip. In 2006, Monroe, who was studying library science, put her degree on hiatus to spend four months as a reporter embedded with the First Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division in Kirkuk.

Obituaries: Bill Banks and Peter Greeman

Bill Banks, longtime co-owner of the former Market Bookshop in Falmouth, Massaschusetts, died on October 18. He was 86.

After serving in the Army Air Corps in World War II, Banks had a successful career in international advertising and marketing. In 1970, Bill and his wife, Caroline, bought the Market Bookshop, which they expanded to include the Market Barn Gallery, where they sold paintings, prints, and sculptures. For a number of years, they operated a second bookstore in Woods Hole. The couple retired from bookselling in 1999.
