News of the death of Judith F. Krug, the head of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom, on Saturday, April 11, has been met with an outpouring of tributes throughout the book industry and beyond. Krug died at age 69 of stomach cancer.

Yesterday, ABA President Gayle Shanks notified association bookstore members via e-mail that the position of association CEO had been offered to, and accepted by, Oren J. Teicher, ABA's current COO. In January, Avin Mark Domnitz, ABA CEO for the past 12 years, announced that he would be stepping down. Teicher's appointment is effective June 1, 2009.

Carmichael's Bookstore in Louisville, Kentucky, has been named the recipient of this year's Publishers Weekly Bookseller of the Year Award. Co-owners Carol Besse and Michael Boggs were stunned, said Besse. "We're really gratified to have been nominated, and we just didn't have any expectation at all that we would win." PW cited the bookstore's close relationship with its customers, as well as its tripling profits over the past decade.
BookSoup is hosting a celebration of the life of Glenn Goldman on Friday, January 16, at 7:00 p.m.
