Intrepid independent booksellers set out Wednesday afternoon on seven literary walking tours through some of Brooklyn's most storied neighborhoods. Here are some snapshots of the tours.
 Just a week before the kickoff of BookExpo America, the busy world of bookselling and publishing has gotten that much more hectic. To-do checklists are getting shorter, last-minute appointments are being confirmed, dry cleaning is getting dropped off, and registered attendees for BEA are reminding themselves to take a few deep breaths, as they head into the final week before the show.
 As MapQuest, Google Maps, and other online sources for travel directions will tell you, visually rendered digital information can be far more robust that many kilobytes of written content. (Or, as we used to say in the 20th century: A picture is worth a thousand words.)
With that in mind, ABA has created an online visual guide to getting from Hotel ABA in Brooklyn to the Javits Convention Center by subway.
The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) will be helping attendees at this year's BookExpo America celebrate free speech in myriad ways. Among the highlights will be the ABFFE Lunch, the ever-popular Silent Auction, a benefit performance by the Rock Bottom Remainders, a party celebrating the publication of ABFFE President Chris Finan's new history of free expression in the U.S., and this year's BEA souvenir T-shirt.
At ABA's Day of Education, to be held Thursday, May 31, at Hotel ABA, the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, two educational sessions will take on subjects that are crucial to the survival of independent booksellers in today's marketplace: growing the bookstore and staving off the competition.
With a population of almost 2.5 million, Brooklyn is the most populous borough of New York City. Brooklyn's neighborhoods are much like small towns in other parts of the country -- each with a distinctive personality and local pride. The ABA-member bookstores listed below reflect the unique qualities of many of these neighborhoods. If time permits, grab a guidebook or map and visit these storefront locations while exploring the area.
