Authors Kwame Alexander and Jerry Craft to Appear in Conversation at Virtual Ci8
- By Emily Behnke
Booksellers attending the American Booksellers Association’s virtual Children’s Institute (Ci8) are invited to join Newbery Award-winning authors Kwame Alexander and Jerry Craft in conversation. The session will take place on Thursday, July 16, at 10:00 a.m. ET with a second airing of the same program at 4:00 p.m. ET.
During the session, Alexander and Craft will discuss their careers as writers, their lives as readers, and their experiences being two of only five Black authors to win Newbery Awards.
They will also talk about their upcoming projects — Craft’s Class Act (Quill Tree Books, October 2020) and a world premiere Kennedy Center Theater performance based on Alexander’s Acoustic Rooster books.
The two authors will also examine the legacy of Black-owned bookstores in addition to the significance independent bookstores have on their lives, as the authors first met at Hue-Man Bookstore in New York City.
The event link will be available on Hopin, the virtual platform where Children’s Institute is taking place.
Booksellers can learn more about Children’s Institute programming here. Children’s Institute will resume in person on June 16–18, 2021, at the Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona. Questions about the institute should be directed to [email protected].
