In response to an overwhelming amount of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, booksellers and readers alike are joining the Trans Rights Readathon from March 20 to 27. This readathon encourages readers to read books by trans, genderqueer, and nonbinary authors (or books featuring trans characters) and to donate to their local trans advocacy groups.

Founded by author Sim Kern, the Trans Rights Readathon has received a staggering amount of support. Initially started as small movement, Kern has been joined by hundreds of creators and more than 4,000 posts on #TransRightsReadathon. The impact of this movement is undeniable and Kern gives daily updates on their Instagram. Among other trans books, Kern mentioned that several titles that saw sales boost as a result of this hastag. Audiobooks like The Wicked Bargain by Gabe Cole Novoa (read by Vico Ortiz) and Rosiee Thor’s Life is Strange: Steph’s Story saw a jump in their rankings.

Kern reiterated on Instagram how touched they were by the turnout and the clear message that there is an audience for these books.

It’s not too late to join in! Pick up a trans book and post about your favorite trans titles and authors using the hashtag #TransRightsReadathon.

If you want to participate officially, you can fill out this form, and submit how much you read, donated, or raised for trans groups. Kern is collecting the data to get a clear view of the impact of the Trans Right Readathon, but says, “As long as you’re encouraging people to read trans books and donate to trans support orgs, you’re participating!”
