Booksellers registered for the American Booksellers Association’s virtual Children’s Institute, taking place July 15–16, 2020, are invited to take part in the workshop “Anti-Racist Allyship: Awareness, Knowledge, and Skills to Foster Equity with Cultures Connecting.” A separate registration is required for this workshop, which will be held on July 15 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET. Note: The workshop is now full, but booksellers can get on the waitlist via the registration link.

Following the murder of George Floyd and the continued impact of individual and systemic racism on the lives of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) in the United States, many white people who want to be supportive are wondering how to best show up. This workshop focuses on the self-awareness, knowledge of historic and current racism, and skills necessary for white people to learn together. In this time, it is important we support and challenge one another, rather than burdening BIPOC with the expectation of educating white allies. Although this session will center on the role of white people in the work for racial justice, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color are welcome to attend and participate in the conversation.

The workshop will be led by Ilsa Govan of Cultures Connecting.

This event is free to all participants. However, to ensure attendance, ABA asks that booksellers reserve their spot with a $40 refundable fee. A refund will be issued once attendance is confirmed on July 15. For booksellers who register for the workshop but can no longer attend, refunds will be given for cancellation requests received by 9:00 p.m. ET on July 6, 2020. Thereafter, refunds will only be given following confirmation of attendance at the workshop or in the event ABA cancels the workshop. All cancellation requests should be emailed to [email protected]

The virtual Children’s Institute is open to all ABA member booksellers and costs $20; visit BookWeb.org now to register. Registration closes July 1.

Children’s Institute will resume in person on June 16–18, 2021, at the Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona. Questions about the institute should be directed to [email protected]
