March will be a month of firsts for the Emerging Leaders Project -- a group of booksellers and industry professionals working together to identify the next generation of industry leaders. On March 18, ELP's New York City chapter will be holding its first-ever "ELNO-BO: Emerging Leaders Night Out - Booksellers Only!"; and on March 26, Emerging Leaders will be holding its first Boston-area meeting.

New York City

After hosting a number of events for "New Yorkers in the book world," the New York City chapter of ELP will host an event for booksellers only. The invitation on the group's blog says, "It's time for us to talk to each other about what we're doing, who we are, and where we want to go. Please join us at our first-ever ELNO-BO: Emerging Leaders Night Out - Booksellers Only!"

ELNO-BO will be held at Three Lives Bookstore, 154 West 10th Street, on Sunday, March 18, at 7:00 p.m. Booksellers are invited to come share pizza, beer, and conversation. The event is open to booksellers in the greater New York City area who consider themselves part of the "next generation" of bookselling (described as "usually 40ish and under, but everyone who is interested in thinking about the future of our industry is welcome"). Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP to [email protected].

Boston

The first Boston-area Emerging Leaders Meeting will be held on Monday, March 26, from 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m., at the Middlesex Lounge in Central Square, 315 Massachusetts Ave. The event is open to anyone in bookselling or publishing who is "hopefully" under the age of 40.

The featured speaker is Tim Huggins, former owner of Newtonville Books, who will discuss how he started, ran, and sold an independent bookstore. Huggins' presentation is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to stay afterwards to talk with him and other booksellers.

Booksellers interested in attending should RSVP by e-mailing Megan Sullivan at [email protected].
