Two Bookstores to Be Honored With a Raven

Mystery Writers of America has announced that it will honor two bookstores that have been major supporters of fiction and nonfiction crime writers with its 2007 Raven Awards. Mitchell Kaplan of Books & Books in Miami and Kathy and Tom Harig of Mystery Loves Company in Baltimore and Oxford, Maryland, will be presented with the Raven at the 2007 Edgar Awards Banquet. The Raven is awarded by MWA's Board of Directors for outstanding achievement in the mystery field outside the realm of creative writing.

Kaplan is being presented with the award for the support that his Books & Books bookstores have given writers over the years, as well as for his leadership in founding and chairing the largest book fair in the country, Miami Book Fair International. Books & Books' three stores are located in Florida's Miami-Dade County.

Kathy and Tom Harig are being presented with the Raven for the role that Mystery Loves Company has played in supporting the careers of hundreds of established and emerging crime writers, and in connecting mystery enthusiasts from the Maryland community with authors.

The Edgar Awards Banquet will be held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City on April 26.

An Inside Look at the New York Times Book Review

Booklovers and regular Times' Book Review readers take note: On Sunday, December 17, at 11:00 a.m. and again at 7:00 p.m., C-SPAN2's Book TV cameras will go Inside the New York Times Book Review. The special will take viewers behind the scenes of the well-known newspaper book section with editor Sam Tanenhaus.

During the hour-long program, Book TV chronicles -- step by step -- the creation of the October 29 issue, going on a guided tour of the review's offices with Mr. Tanenhaus. Book TV examines how the section is assembled while talking to key preview (or assignment) editors and book review staff to learn about the criteria and decision-making process for choosing books and reviewers, the development of graphics, headlines and pull quotes, copy editing and other visual elements that go into the production of the weekly section. The program will be archived online once it airs on Book TV at www.booktv.org.
