 Does your town love its Main Street? Starting May 2, Scholastic Inc. and the American Booksellers Association will offer a way for your town to prove it -- and a chance for participants to win a Main Street spending spree. Scholastic and ABA are partnering to bring the Main Street Contest -- an essay contest for children -- to Book Sense bookstores.
 This week, ABA announced that ABA member bookstores have the chance to give away a trip for four to London to one of their customers as a Grand Prize in the "Independent Muggles for Harry Potter" sweepstakes, sponsored by Book Sense.
 By tradition, plum wine is made at home by an individual, for the eventual enjoyment, perhaps, of a few family members and friends.
 The 91st annual winners of the 2007 Pulitzer Prizes in Journalism, Letters, Drama, and Music were announced on Monday, April 16, by Columbia University. This year's fiction winner is The Road by Cormac McCarthy (Knopf) -- a 2007 Book Sense Book of the Year Honor Book, a 2006 October Book Sense Notable, the current Oprah Book Club Pick, and a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist.
Kurt Vonnegut Dies at 84
Kurt Vonnegut, considered a key figure in 20th-century American literature, died April 11 at 84. He had suffered brain injuries resulting from a recent fall at his Manhattan home, said his wife, photographer Jill Krementz. Vonnegut's more than a dozen books, short stories, essays, and plays, including Slaughterhouse-Five, Cat's Cradle, and most recently A Man Without a Country -- offered elements of social commentary, science fiction, and autobiography via dark humor and satire.
In preparation for the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on July 21, Scholastic has launched a campaign centered on the seven most frequently asked questions regarding the content of the final volume in J.K. Rowling's record-breaking series and the fate of the characters that readers have grown to love -- or feel otherwise about -- since the publication of the first book in 1998.

Booksellers ranging from Washington State to New Hampshire and points south are reporting a scam involving the title The Shortcut: 20 Stories to Get You From Here to There, edited by Danna Curran (Author Identity Press). A number of booksellers have reported receiving a special order for two copies of the print-on-demand title from someone calling himself Mike Evers. When the books come in, they soon discover that the credit card number used to order the books is a bad account and the phone number is disconnected.
