Pulitzer Winners Announced

The 91st annual winners of the 2007 Pulitzer Prizes in Journalism, Letters, Drama, and Music were announced on Monday, April 16, by Columbia University. This year's fiction winner is The Road by Cormac McCarthy (Knopf) -- a 2007 Book Sense Book of the Year Honor Book, a 2006 October Book Sense Notable, the current Oprah Book Club Pick, and a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist.

Kurt Vonnegut Dies at 84

Kurt Vonnegut, considered a key figure in 20th-century American literature, died April 11 at 84. He had suffered brain injuries resulting from a recent fall at his Manhattan home, said his wife, photographer Jill Krementz. Vonnegut's more than a dozen books, short stories, essays, and plays, including Slaughterhouse-Five, Cat's Cradle, and most recently A Man Without a Country -- offered elements of social commentary, science fiction, and autobiography via dark humor and satire.

Scam Warning: No Shortcut

Booksellers ranging from Washington State to New Hampshire and points south are reporting a scam involving the title The Shortcut: 20 Stories to Get You From Here to There, edited by Danna Curran (Author Identity Press). A number of booksellers have reported receiving a special order for two copies of the print-on-demand title from someone calling himself Mike Evers. When the books come in, they soon discover that the credit card number used to order the books is a bad account and the phone number is disconnected.
