The April Book Sense Picks and Notables Preview

Booksellers have spoken regarding the number-one title on the April Book Sense Picks list, and ... it's a tie.

When the tabulating was done, The Madonnas of Leningrad, a novel by Debra Dean (Morrow), and Saving the World, a novel by Julia Alvarez (Algonquin), had received an equal amount of support from independent booksellers in the Book Sense program.

Curious George Camera Deadline Extended to March 8

The deadline to return Curious George disposable cameras and be entered in a drawing for prizes has been extended to March 8. Stores can also send their own digital photos to Associate Book Sense Marketing Director Meg Smith at [email protected].

A Picks Deadline Reminder

Tomorrow, Friday, March 3, is the deadline for nominations for the May Book Sense Picks list.

And there is one more nomination deadline this month: Friday, March 24, is the deadline for the 2006 Summer Children's Picks.

Nominations may be sent via an easy-to-use online nomination form or by including them in an e-mail to [email protected].

Picks to Tie Into The History Channel's American Revolution Series

This summer, Book Sense and The History Channel (THC) will again be partnering to create marketing materials for booksellers to tie-in with THC programming. A new series focusing on the American Revolution will begin on THC during the first weekend in June and will continue weekly on Sunday nights for 13 episodes.

Reading Group & May Picks Nominations Needed

There are two important deadlines coming up for the Book Sense Picks program:

  • Friday, February 24, is the deadline for the Reading Group Book Sense Picks list, and
  • Friday, March 3, is the deadline for the May Book Sense Picks list.

Since its debuted three years ago at the suggestion of booksellers, the Book Sense Reading Group list has been an enormous success with book-buying consumers.

'Curious' Camera Return Deadline March 1 for Prize Eligibility

To be eligible to win prizes, stores with Book Sense that are participating in the Curious George promotion created by Houghton Mifflin and Book Sense must return disposable cameras, with undeveloped photos of special events and displays, to Book Sense by March 1. ABA will develop the film and return a CD of the photos to the bookstore.

Gift Cards and Balmy Weather Stoke January Retail Sales

On February 14, the U.S. Commerce Department delivered a valentine to the nation's economy. At 8:30 a.m., the agency released a monthly sales estimate for January showing that retail and food services sales were up 2.3 percent from December 2005 and had risen 8.8 percent over January 2005. Estimated January sales were $365.4 billion, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes.
