Remember to Cast Your Ballot for the ABA Board

The American Booksellers Association is encouraging all Regular Bookstore members to cast their ballots for the 2010 election of ABA officers and directors. The ballots, which were sent to stores via e-mail on Monday, March 22, are due back by midnight on April 26. All voting is being conducted electronically, as authorized by a 2009 amendment to the ABA Bylaws.

ABA Launches New Member Relations Department

To ensure that booksellers have a simple and convenient way to get information about the opportunities available to them as part of their membership, the American Booksellers Association has created a new Member Relations Department.

Two member relations managers will serve as the main contacts for all bookstore and provisional members. "Elizabeth Nichols and Kaitlin Pitcher are eager to help," said Membership and Marketing Officer Meg Zelickson Smith.

Free, One-Day Seminar on Opening a Bookstore Added to ABA Program @ BEA

The American Booksellers Association is sponsoring a free, one-day "Introduction to Retail Bookselling" Seminar, on Monday, May 24, at New York's Javits Convention Center, just prior to the Day of Education and BookExpo America. The seminar, facilitated by the Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates, is geared toward people interested in opening a bookstore.

ABA Policy Staff Goes to Washington

This week, American Booksellers Association staff traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with key legislators and other associations to discuss sales tax equity and other policy issues. Over a two-day period, ABA CEO Oren Teicher, Content Director Dan Cullen, and Senior Public Policy Analyst David Grogan met with senior staff from the offices of Sen. Michael Enzi (R-WY) and Rep. Bill Delahunt (D-MA), and with representatives of the National Retail Federation (NRF) and AARP. In addition, they attended the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) American Associations Day 2010.

All ABA Regular Bookstore members should be on the lookout for an electronic ballot for the 2010 election of ABA officers and directors to arrive via an e-mail from the American Booksellers Association on Monday, March 22. All voting is being conducted electronically, as authorized by a 2009 amendment to the ABA Bylaws.

One person per ABA Member ID number may vote, and a BookWeb log -in and the store ABA Member ID number are required.

Spring Booksellers Forums Underway

The American Booksellers Association kicked off its 2010 Spring Forum Tour last weekend in conjunction with the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance and the National Association of College Stores' Campus Market Expo (CAMEX) in Orlando, Florida. At the forum, led by ABA CEO Oren Teicher, booksellers shared their thoughts and concerns about e-books and how indies can participate moving forward, as well as ideas for alternative business models and new ways to find customers.

Follett Announces Online Textbook Rental for Independent Bookstores

This week, Follet Higher Education Group announced the launch of two new college textbook rental programs for independent bookstores: an online affiliate program and an in-store rental support program.

Follet said that the Online Affiliate Program is "a turnkey rental service," offering revenue share, an expansive list of titles, a branded online rental solution, and an option to serve as students' "return depot."

Indies Choice Book Awards Voting Underway

The owners and staff at all ABA member stores are invited to cast their ballots online to choose the winners of the 2010 Indies Choice Book Awards. The winners, to be announced in April, will be honored at BookExpo America 2010 in New York City.

The American Booksellers Association announced the finalists and opened voting on Monday, March 1.
