This week, Book Sense is announcing the Summer 2004 Children's Book Sense Picks, based on the nominations of independent booksellers nationwide. The mailing of printed fliers to stores began on Tuesday, May 25, and booksellers should be receiving them within seven working days.

Marjorie Cole Receives Bellwether Prize for Fiction

On May 5, Barbara Kingsolver announced the 2004 winner of the Bellwether Prize for Fiction. Marjorie Kowalski Cole will receive the $25,000 award for her novel, Correcting the Landscape, which will be published by HarperCollins. Cole has lived in Seattle and Ireland, but since 1966 has been a resident of Alaska, where her novel is set.

Senators Introduce Bill to Repeal Patriot Act Sunset Provisions

On Friday, May 21, 10 Republican senators, led by Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ), introduced a bill (S. 2476) that would repeal the sunset clauses of the USA Patriot Act, essentially making the entire bill -- including Section 215 -- permanent, as reported by Secrecy News. While civil liberties groups and some members of the Senate decried the bill, many believe that the senators lack the support necessary to pass the bill.
