Senate Committees Hold AHP Hearings

The Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship (SBC) and the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) each held hearings last week regarding Association Health Plans (AHPs) and the small business health care crisis. AHPs would enable small businesses to band together across state lines through bona fide trade and professional associations to purchase affordable health packages for themselves and their employees.

ABA Offers 'Increasing Margin' in California in May

ABA and Northern California Independent Booksellers Association members are being invited to attend a preview of "Increasing Margin: An Advanced Course in Growing Your Bottom Line," presented by ABA CEO Avin Mark Domnitz, at the NCIBA offices in San Francisco on Wednesday, May 18. The course is part of ABA's new education program developed for BookExpo America (BEA) 2005.

June 1 Deadline for Book Sense Gift Certificate Phase-Out

Effective June 1, bookstores must stop selling Book Sense paper gift certificates. Any Book Sense Paper gift certificate sold and dated after June 1, 2005, will not be valid. However, in order to protect consumers, booksellers will still be required to accept valid paper gift certificates sold prior to that date as per local/state laws and other criteria set forth by Book Sense.
