Live From Portland, Oregon -- ABA Winter Institute, Day 1

Portland, Oregon, no stranger to great bookstores, this morning became center stage for independent bookselling when the second annual ABA Winter Institute began a two-day run at the Portland Doubletree at Lloyd's Center. Five hundred ABA member booksellers from approximately 200 stores were registered for this year's event.

The Winter Institute features 16 educational sessions, as well as six publishers' reps' picks sessions, a plenary session with author Daniel Pink, a lunch panel featuring new media experts, and many other opportunities for bookseller interaction.

Net Neutrality: Senators Look to Stave Off Internet Inequity

With a new, Democrat-controlled Congress in session, two Senators are hoping that their "net neutrality" bill will now gain some traction. Earlier this month, Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) introduced the Internet Freedom Preservation Act, legislation that looks to ensure that companies using the Internet to connect to consumers can compete on a level playing field.

The American Booksellers Association's 2007 Winter/Spring Booksellers Forum tour will start in the Southeast on Thursday, February 22. The forum, organized in conjunction with the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA), will be held at Alabama Booksmith in Birmingham, Alabama.
