PBS Wants to Know: What Are the Top Five American Novels?

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

What's your favorite American novel? Perhaps it's Absalom, Absalom!, Huckleberry Finn, or To Kill a Mockingbird ... or maybe it's The Great Gatsby, Moby Dick, or The Age of Innocence. Whatever your opinion, the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) wants to know.

PBS is preparing to broadcast a documentary about the American novel, and it has invited several literary organizations, including members of the American Booksellers Association, to contribute to the development of the accompanying website.

One component of the site is a "Best American Novels" section. And staff at PBS is asking ABA members to take a moment to complete a short online survey regarding what they consider to be the best in American literature. The results of the survey will be tallied and posted on the PBS website.

Booksellers can complete the survey at www.thirteen.org/americannovelsurvey/aba.html. The deadline for participation is Wednesday, March 14.
