Booksellers attending this weekend’s Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance Fall Discovery Show in Raleigh, North Carolina, are invited to hear George Gibson, publishing director of Bloomsbury USA, present the American Booksellers Association’s all-new education session “The Economics of Publishing and How They Impact Booksellers.”

Because understanding all sides of the book industry will make booksellers and publishers better at their jobs, ABA has asked leading publishing executives to present this session at each of the eight regional shows to provide booksellers with important insights into the financial realities publishers face every day. Likewise, at Winter Institute 11, ABA will offer a complementary session introducing publishers to the financial concerns of independent booksellers as reflected in their Profit and Loss statements.

The SIBA trade show will be held from Friday, September 18, through Sunday, September 20, at the Hilton North Raleigh/Midtown. The “Economics of Publishing” session, which will be moderated by ABA Board member Jamie Fiocco of Flyleaf Books in Charlotte, will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 9:50 a.m. on Friday in the Hilton’s Salon B.

During the session, Gibson will walk booksellers through the Profit and Loss statement of a new trade title and, in the process, introduce booksellers to the key financial realities of publishing and delineate the many factors that affect both the bookstore channel and consumers. Important P&L line items, such as suggested retail price, production costs, marketing, and returns, will be discussed, as well as broader themes that impact the day-to-day cost of publishing, including the rise of e-books and the implications on reprint decisions.

Trade show attendees are also invited to stop by the ABA booth on the trade show floor to learn about ABA’s programs and services and upcoming initiatives. ABA staff on hand to talk to booksellers at the show will be CEO Oren Teicher and Member Relationship Manager Nathan Halter. Booksellers who drop off their business card at the ABA booth will also have an extra chance at winning a scholarship to Winter Institute 11.
