Here in photos are some of the highlights of the first two days at BEA 2013 at the Javits Convention Center in New York City.

At the BEA Keynote, “Shaping the Future of the Book — Insight From Leaders Who Are Transforming How We Read,” are moderator John Ingram, Ingram Content Group chair and CEO, and panelists Steve Bercu, incoming ABA president and co-owner of Austin, Texas’ BookPeople; Barbara Marcus, president and publisher of Random House Children’s Books; Jane Friedman, CEO and co-founder of Open Road Integrated Media; and Michael Pietsch, CEO of Hachette Book Group.

Michael Tucker of Books Inc., Terry Gilman of Mysterious Galaxy, Christine Onorati of WORD, and Alzada Knickerbocker of Avid Reader Active at the ABA panel “How to Plan for a Second Location.”

Hotel ABA was the site of a reception on Tuesday night hosted by Random House and on Wednesday night hosted by indie presses — Beacon Press, Black Dog & Leventhal, Blue Apple Books, Lonely Planet, Milkweed Editions, Other Press, and Quirk Books. Booksellers look at some of the titles displayed at the indie press reception.

Thursday morning BEA breakfast speakers Wally Lamb (We Are Water, HarperCollins) and Ishmael Beah (The Radiance of Tomorrow, Sarah Crichton Books/FSG) autograph exclusively for ABA member booksellers in the Indie Bookseller Lounge on the trade show floor.

 

ABA Board member Matthew Norcross welcomed booksellers to the ABA Celebration of Bookselling and Author Awards Lunch on Thursday. Peter Brown, an E.B. White Read-Aloud Picture Book honoree, thanks booksellers for their support.
Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen, the winners of the E.B. White Read-Aloud Picture Book Award, amused booksellers, and themselves, from the podium.
John Green, winner of both the Young Adult Indies Choice Award and the Indie Champion Award, spoke to booksellers via video as he awaited the birth of his second child. Eowyn Ivey, the 2013 Indies Choice Adult Debut winner, thanked booksellers and explained that she was on a book tour in Alaska.

Outgoing ABA President Becky Anderson and incoming President Steve Bercu hosted ABA's Town Hall meeting on Thursday afternoon. ABA CEO Oren Teicher presented the Chief Executive's Report at the ABA Annual Meeting.
