Both FedEx and UPS have recently announced an increase in their rates on ground and air shipments, effective January 3, 2005. According to PartnerShip, which offers a money-saving small-package shipping program exclusively for members of the American Booksellers Association, rates for FedEx Ground and UPS Ground shipments will increase an average of 2.9 percent, and a fuel surcharge, based on a fuel index that will vary from week to week, will be implemented.

PartnerShip also reported that FedEx Express base rates on air shipments will increase an average of 4.6 percent, however a lower fuel surcharge will result in a net increase of 2.6 percent. The UPS base rate on air shipments will increase an average of 2.9 percent, and the company will maintain its current fuel surcharge.

The PartnerShip small-package program, which is free and has no shipping minimums, can help booksellers save up to 30 percent on FedEx Ground and up to 26 percent on FedEx Express shipping costs.

PartnerShip also provides ABA members with freight services for shipments over 250 lbs. through Yellow Transportation and Overnite Transportation. Discounts can range up to 63 percent off base rates for these carriers.
