The New Yorker Leads the Pack in Nominations for Magazine Awards

The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) has announced the nominees for the 37th Annual National Magazine Awards, which will be awarded in a ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria on May 1. The New Yorker again took away the most nominations -- with nine nominations in eight categories -- and 19 print magazines were nominated for more than one award, including The Atlantic Monthly and Time, with five nominations in five categories. The awards were established to honor "editorial excellence and encourage editorial vitality."

The nominees in the Fiction Category are:

  • The Atlantic Monthly: Michael Kelly, editor, for "The Hunter's Wife," by Anthony Doerr, May; "Digging," by Beth Lordan, September; "Popular Girls," by Karen Shepard, October.
  • Harper's Magazine: Lewis H. Lapham, editor, for "Curly Red," by Joyce Carol Oates, April; "Revenge," by Steven Millhauser, July; "Love and Hydrogen," by Jim Shepard, December.
  • The New Yorker: David Remnick, editor, for "What is Remembered," by Alice Munro, February 19 and February 26; "A House on the Plains," by E.L. Doctorow, June 18 and June 25; "Surrounded by Sleep," by Akhil Sharma, December 10.
  • The Paris Review: George Plimpton, editor, for "Aqua Boulevard," by Maile Meloy, Spring/Summer; "The Caretaker," by Anthony Doerr, Fall; "Eating Mammals," by John Barlow, Winter.
  • Zoetrope: All-Story: Adrienne Brodeur, editor-in-chief, for "Anything for Money," by Karen E. Bender, August; "The Evil B.B. Chow," by Steve Almond, August; "The Affairs of Each Beast," by David Benioff, November.
