Max and Ruby to Headline Children’s Art Auction

One of the highlights of the Children’s Art Auction and Reception, sponsored by the ABC Children’s Group at ABA, on the evening of June 6 at BookExpo America, will be the live auction of five double-spread pages from the dummy photographed for Rosemary Wells’ forthcoming Max & Ruby’s Treasure Hunt.  The pages are composed of original drawings in pencil and pen as well as watercolor images that were assembled to create the final images for the book, which will be published by Viking in October.  Max & Ruby’s Treasure Hunt is an interactive picture book with lift-the-flap clues, and some of the clues are included on the dummy pages.

The pages will be auctioned as a set by honorary chair Walter Dean Myers and his son, illustrator Christopher, during a session of live bidding of the auction.  Most of the original works — more than 100 — will be sold in a silent auction.  A preview can be seen online.

The auction, which benefits the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression and its defense of the rights of young readers, will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the end of Javits Center’s South Concourse (Level 2).  Light refreshments, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks will be served.  After the auction, buses will drop attendees at convenient locations in midtown Manhattan.

Tickets are $95 ($75 for bookseller members of the ABC Children’s Group) and can be purchased here. Tickets are limited and may sell out prior to BookExpo.  If not, they can be purchased at the event or at a preview of auction artwork in the South Concourse during the day on June 6.  Tickets purchased onsite will be $105 ($85 for ABC booksellers).  A ticket to the auction is included in registration for ABA’s inaugural Children’s Institute.

A number of artworks will also be raffled.  Raffle tickets may be purchased during the June 6 preview.
