As part of its commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy this November, The History Channel has distributed a special JFK informational kit to 17,000 public and college libraries around the country. Featured in the kit is the Book Sense 76 JFK Top Ten list along with a JFK counter easel display with bookmarks promoting the channel's special JFK Week programming airing on November 14, 16 - 22 at 8:00 p.m. (7:00 p.m. Central Time). The JFK Top Ten, featuring new and backlist titles illuminating the life and times of our 35th president, was compiled by Book Sense in association with The History Channel. Pads of the JFK Top Ten are on their way to stores with Book Sense in the October White Box.

"The History Channel's distribution of the JFK Top Ten to public libraries across the country is a wonderful opportunity for readers to learn about these recommended titles, as well as for Book Sense stores to market themselves in their communities though cooperative efforts with local libraries," said Meg Smith, associate director of Book Sense marketing. "In addition, during November, the History Channel Web site (www.HistoryChannel.com) will be featuring the Book Sense list and promoting the brand as well."

Judy Klein Frimer, director of brand enhancement at The History Channel added, "The 40th anniversary of the death of President John Kennedy is an enormously important time for us to look back and reflect upon the impact this presidency had on our lives. We are delighted to be able to work with Book Sense and all of the independent bookstores and libraries that do such an extraordinary job of providing information to the public, by providing them with meaningful materials that can effectively educate and contribute to the awareness of our history."

On November 16, The History Channel will premiere a three-hour documentary, JFK: A Presidency Revealed, as the centerpiece of its weeklong tribute. The program is featured, along with the book President Kennedy Has been Shot by The Newseum with Susan Bennett and Cathy Trost (Sourcebooks), on the November bookmark to be displayed in the Hardcover History easel.

In addition, in mid-October, The History Channel sent stores with Book Sense a counter card that can be used to strengthen displays or events commemorating the anniversary of JFK's assassination.

To increase library participation, The History Channel will send libraries a DVD of JFK: A Presidency Revealed if they display the JFK Week poster, counter card, bookmarks, and Book Sense 76 JFK Top Ten. Libraries may also enter a contest to win one of five $1,000 grants if they create additional programming and displays surrounding The History Channel programming. Libraries with questions should contact Megan Stillerman, JFK Library Program Director at (917) 256-0786.
