Bestselling novelist Celeste Ng will serve as the ambassador for the fourth annual Independent Bookstore Day (IBD), which will be celebrated at more than 490 participating independent bookstores across the country on Saturday, April 28.

“My favorite thing about independent bookstores is that they all have their own distinct personalities: each reflects not just the tastes but also the ideals of its community. From the second you walk in, you get a sense of what the people who shop there know and enjoy — as well as what’s currently on their minds, what they want to learn, and what they value: in short, what kinds of people they want to be,” said Ng, the author of Everything I Never Told You (Penguin Press, June 2014) and Little Fires Everywhere (Penguin Press, September 2017). “Bookstores are more than just repositories of knowledge, they’re living, breathing, evolving representations of our best selves. I love Independent Bookstore Day because it asks readers, writers, and booksellers to join in celebrating all that bookstores represent. It’s a gathering to remind ourselves that the written word can change both us and the world, and of what’s possible when we all come together.”

On Saturday, April 28, independent bookstores across the country will celebrate Independent Bookstore Day with special events in addition to exclusive books and literary items specially created for the event.

“Indie bookstores continue to occupy a special place in the hearts of anyone passionate about books, ideas, freedom of speech, vibrant neighborhoods, and creating community,” said Independent Bookstore Day Program Director Samantha Schoech. “In today’s fast-changing world, indie bookstores still offer the delight of discovery, the comfort of community, and the tools for reflection, namely a universe of ideas and stories. We can’t wait to celebrate indie bookstores and the readers who love them on Saturday, April 28.”

Visit the Independent Bookstore Day website to learn more about the event; the “For the Trade” section includes a handy month-by-month planning guide, bookseller information and FAQs, and more. Booksellers can follow Independent Bookstore Day on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
