O, The Oprah Magazine Announces First-Ever Book Series

Hearst Magazines, one of the largest publishers of monthly magazines, and Oxmoor House, a book publishing division of Southern Progress Corporation, announced a partnership to create and publish an annual series of hardcover books based on O, The Oprah Magazine's editorial content. The first book, Live Your Best Life: A Treasury of Wisdom, Wit, Advice, Interviews, and Inspiration From O, The Oprah Magazine, will be available September 2005.


L.A. Times Names Book Prize Winners

On April 22, the Los Angeles Times presented its annual Robert Kirsch Award for lifetime achievement to bestselling mystery writer Tony Hillerman. During its 25th annual Book Prizes ceremony at UCLA's Royce Hall, the Times also honored outstanding literary achievement in nine categories: fiction, first fiction, history, mystery/thriller, poetry, science and technology, and young adult fiction. Each winner, including Hillerman, received a $1,000 cash award.

Among the winners were Colm Toibin in the Fiction category for The Master: A Novel (Scribner); Evan Wright in the Current Interest category for Generation Kill: Devil Dogs Iceman, Captain America, and the New Face of American War (G.P. Putnam's Sons); and Melvin Burgess in the Young Adult Fiction category for Doing It (Holt Books for Young Readers).


Steven A. Pace Joins Workman as Sales Director

Steven A. Pace joined Workman as sales director for the book trade, effective April 25. He is responsible for managing the group that sells Workman, Algonquin, Artisan, Black Dog & Leventhal, and Storey titles to independent booksellers and regional wholesalers.

Prior to joining Workman, Pace was Baker & Taylor's vice president of retail sales; before B&T, he served in various sales positions at Random House. He began his career as a bookseller at Chapter Two Bookstore in Charleston, South Carolina.
