On July 7, Europa Editions announced the launch of the Europa International Book Fair Scholarship for U.S. booksellers who are interested in attending some of the biggest and best international book fairs. The inaugural scholarship is for this October’s Frankfurt Book Fair and will include travel from the U.S., accommodations, a per diem allowance, entry to the fair, and a customized itinerary of meetings and events. Future scholarships will include the Turin Book Fair, the London Book Fair, and the Frankfurt Book Fair, among others.

“Europa has always been about building bridges,” said Europa Editor in Chief Michael Reynolds. “Booksellers have always been and will continue to be an essential part of that bridge-building. We want to give American booksellers more opportunities to cultivate deeper connections with the international publishing and bookselling community. And more members of this community gather at the London, Frankfurt, and Turin book fairs than anywhere else.”

This year’s scholarship is linked to booksellers’ participation in the November 1 launch of Elena Ferrante’s two new books: Frantumaglia: An Author’s Journey and The Beach at Night. In future years, the scholarship will be open to any bookseller who is looking to establish and foster connections with the international publishing and bookselling community.

To qualify for this year’s scholarship to the Frankfurt Book Fair, a bookstore must host a #FerranteNightFever launch event during the week of October 31.

Europa Editions will help facilitate the event by providing an event kit with promotional ideas, discussion questions, and #FerranteNightFever posters, as well as 50 Ferrante Fever buttons and Frantumaglia bookmarks to give away to customers before, during, or after the event. Europa will also add the store event to the #FerranteNightFever interactive map, a major component of its media blitz for the events beginning in October.

One participating bookstore will win a scholarship for one bookseller to the Frankfurt Book Fair (October 19–23, 2016). At the fair, the scholarship winner will attend bookseller-focused panels, meet authors from around the world, attend publishing parties, and more.

For a chance to win the scholarship, booksellers must do the following:

  • Confirm by July 30 that the bookstore is going to host a #FerranteNightFever event during the week of October 31 by writing to [email protected];
  • Send details of the event (date, time, format, participants) to Europa no later than September 15;
  • Set up an event page on the store website and/or create an event on Facebook so that Europa can link to it from the #FerranteNightFever interactive map;
  • Tweet photos of the event tagging @europaeditions and #FerranteNightFever.

The winning store will be notified by August 15; the store owner or manager will decide who from the store will be the recipient of the scholarship.

Questions about the scholarship should be sent via e-mail to [email protected] with the subject line #FerranteNightFever.
