The American Booksellers Association’s Governance Review Committee — composed of bookseller members Sarah Bagby of Watermark Books & Café in Wichita, Kansas; Jeff Deutsch of The Seminary Co-op in Chicago, Illinois; and Amy Thomas of Pegasus Books in Berkeley and Oakland, California — is seeking feedback from ABA member stores.

Below is a note to ABA member booksellers from the Governance Review Committee.

ABA’s Governance Review Committee (GRC) is at work on a survey regarding governance as part of the Association’s periodic assessment process. As a first step, we want to gauge members’ knowledge of and interest in this topic. Please take a minute or two to answer the following question via SurveyMonkey:

What are your thoughts about ABA’s governance?

A) I am well acquainted with ABA governance, including the Carver model, ABA’s by-laws, ends policies, the respective roles of the Board and the CEO, and the governance review process.

B) I am vaguely aware of ABA governance and attend ABA Town Halls when I can; I would like to learn more.

C) I do not particularly care about the governance of the organization as long as ABA is achieving its goals.

Booksellers who would like to participate further in the process by receiving a more detailed survey that will help the Committee assess the effectiveness of ABA’s governance and identify areas for improvement can send their name and e-mail address, with a subject line of “GRC Survey,” to our project consultant, Nanette M. Blandin, at [email protected].

Please complete this questionnaire and send survey requests by no later than 11:59 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 26. Questions can be directed to Nanette via e-mail or by phone at (202) 320-8228.
