2013 National Book Award Winners Announced

The winners of the 2013 National Book Awards were announced on Wednesday, November 20, at the 64th National Book Awards Ceremony and Benefit Dinner, hosted by MSNBC Morning Joe’s Mika Brzezinski, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. 

This year’s winners are: 

Fiction

James McBride, The Good Lord Bird (Riverhead Books/Penguin Random House)

Nonfiction

George Packer, The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America (Farrar, Straus and Giroux)

Poetry

Mary Szybist, Incarnadine: Poems (Graywolf Press)

Young People’s Literature

Cynthia Kadohata, The Thing About Luck (Atheneum Books for Young Readers/Simon & Schuster)

Also at tonight’s ceremony, in recognition of his outstanding achievement in fiction writing, E.L. Doctorow was honored with the National Book Foundation’s 2013 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

This year’s Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community was presented to Dr. Maya Angelou for the enrichment that her works have brought to the literary world throughout her lifetime.
