In October, central New York State became home to a new bookstore with a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (GLBT) focus, when The Lavender Inkwell Bookshoppe opened in Syracuse. Co-owners Scott Henni and John Besaw started the barely 700-square-foot store because they felt a need for one, especially in the city's Near Northeast historic district.

The Winter 2006/2007 Book Sense Children's Picks list can now be previewed online. Independent bookstores with Book Sense will begin receiving the Children's Picks fliers, which are being mailed directly from the printer, within the next week. Additional copies may be requested via e-mail to [email protected].

Beginning in 2007, Book Sense will augment its current monthly Red and White Box programs with a series of quarterly mailings of materials specifically geared toward children's booksellers. In addition, the Book Sense Children's Picks will expand from three to four lists annually, with the creation of a new spring list.

Sixteen years ago, Mary Alice Gorman and her husband, Richard Goldman, decided to open an independent bookstore because a doctor suggested she find a "low stress" job.

This week Book Sense announces the 2006 Halloween Top Ten. The list is produced in conjunction with the Association of American Publishers' Get Caught Reading initiative and is based on the nominations of independent booksellers nationwide.

Booksellers in the Book Sense program will be receiving the Halloween Top Ten in the September Red Box.

The article titled "WNBA Calls for Pannell Award Nominees" in the August 17 issue of Bookselling This Week was incorrect. The Women's National Book Association will not call for Pannell Award nominees until October, and the contact will be Mary Grey James, chair of the Pannell Award Committee.

Banned Books Week begins on Sunday, September 24, and once again the American Booksellers Association and the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) have collaborated to produce a Banned Books Book Sense Top Ten, compiled from titles nominated by independent booksellers nationwide.
