In response to the continuing controversy surrounding the veracity of the memoir A Million Little Pieces, James Frey has written an author's note, now available on the Random House website.

The American Library Association announced the winners of its prestigious children's book awards on Monday, January 23. Criss Cross by Lynne Rae Perkins, and The Hello, Goodbye Window, illustrated by Chris Raschka and written by Norton Juster, were designated the Newbery and the Caldecott winners, respectively.

Voting for the 2006 Book Sense Book of the Year Awards is now open to the owners and staff of all ABA member bookstores through a convenient online form or by paper ballot.

Here are the winners of the 2006 John Newbery and Randolph Caldecott medals, along with other award winners and honor books, announced on Monday, January 23, at the 2006 American Library Association Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio.

In mid-December, the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association (NCIBA), the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART), and Book Sense teamed up for a promotion that encouraged BART riders to visit their local independent bookstores. On Tuesday, December 13, fifty thousand fliers featuring an area-specific Book Sense Picks list, as well as a coupon worth $10 off the purchase of any one of the titles at participating stores, were distributed at six BART stations.

This week, Book Sense presents the 2006 Valentine's Day Top Ten. The list is produced in conjunction with the Association of American Publishers' (AAP) Get Caught Reading literacy campaign and is part of an ongoing initiative with AAP to create seasonal lists based on the nominations of independent booksellers nationwide.

Booksellers in the Book Sense program are receiving the Valentine's Day Top Ten in the January Red Box. The list is also available in PDF format.

Book Sense Best Children's Books: Favorites for All Ages Recommended by Independent Booksellers -- a collaboration of Newmarket Press and the American Booksellers Association's Book Sense marketing program -- has been noted by media outlets nationwide as an indispensable resource for children's literature. The book's buzz has also garnered press attention for local independent booksellers.

Last week on National Public Radio's Morning Edition, Susan Stamberg and several independent booksellers gave NPR listeners a gift -- a roster of favorite titles unlike those on any bestseller list. The three booksellers interviewed for "Independent Booksellers Make Their Holiday Picks" were Rona Brinlee of The Book Mark in Atlantic Beach, Florida; Lucia Silva of Portrait of a Bookstore in Studio City, California; and Chuck Robinson of Village Books in Bellingham, Washington.

The 2005 Book Sense Bestsellers, a special listing of the year's bestselling titles at independent bookstores with Book Sense nationwide, was created to provide stores with a versatile marketing tool to help drive sales during the all-important holiday season and into the new year.
