The 2006 Quill Book Award finalists were announced on Tuesday, August 22, by NBC weatherman Al Roker. Voting to choose the winners, which will be announced during a ceremony on October 10 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, is open to consumers through September 30.

Independent bookstores with Book Sense will begin receiving the Children's Picks fliers, which are being mailed directly from the printer, during the week of August 28. Starbucks to Add Books to the Mix

On August 8, Starbucks announced that the next phase of its "overall entertainment initiative" would be integrating books into its entertainment offerings. The nationwide promotion will begin on October 3, 2006, with the sale of Mitch Albom's upcoming novel, For One More Day (Hyperion). Starbucks Entertainment president Ken Lombard told the Associated Press that For One More Day will be sold at full price and that Starbucks has no plans for a major expansion of books or other entertainment offerings.

A New HarperCollins Mystery

Early this month, HarperCollins announced to booksellers via mass e-mail that it would soon release a book that "will make headlines around the world," but it kept the title and author a secret. The e-mail offered most of the bibliographic information -- the ISBN, page number, and release date, but included nothing that could divulge the title.
