There are two important deadlines this month for the Book Sense Picks program:

• August 4 -- October Book Sense Picks
• August 11 -- Book Sense Halloween Top Ten

The nominations for the Halloween Top Ten can be fiction and nonfiction, frontlist and backlist, for adults and children.

The town of Salem, Oregon, is not a typical stop for many authors on tour, said Greg Millard, co-owner of Jackson's Books. But that hasn't stopped the 29-year-old bookstore from maintaining a full calendar of well-attended events, featuring readings and several writers-on-writing series presented by local authors.

The August Book Sense Notables are featured on a flier and shelf-talkers that can be downloaded in PDF format from ABA's trade website, BookWeb.org.

Lisa Sharp, the owner of Nightbird Books, which opened in April in Fayetteville, Arkansas, a college town of more than 65,000, has been pleasantly surprised by the lengths that people have gone to show their support for her new bookstore.

Kate Bearce's Main Street Books is in Pella, Iowa, a town one hour from Des Moines, but steeped in the traditions of Holland. Founded by a descendant of an immigrant Dutch family, the store originally bore the name De Boekenader, a Dutch word for bookseller, said Bearce. In the early 1990s, the store was sold to two women who renamed it Main Street Books to reflect its address.

The deadline for nominations for this year's Banned Books Top Ten Picks -- a crucial element in many stores' Banned Books Week activities in September -- is Monday, July 17. Nominations are needed for adult and children's titles in either hardcover or paperback.

Past lists have showcased important titles that have been either challenged or banned in the U.S. These have ranged from A Wrinkle in Time, to The Daily Show With Jon Stewart Presents America (The Book), to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Ann Burlingham is a small-town bookseller with big ideas. Her eponymous Burlingham Books opened on January 31 in Perry, New York, and celebrated its grand opening on June 17. Open seven days a week, and until 11:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, the store features live music and the only public changing table in town. And Burlingham has many more ideas about how to make the store a destination.

British music-lovers have been drawn to the sounds of their American cousins ever since Yankee Doodle picked up a fife.

Last week's Bestseller List, which was dated June 29 and July 6, is suitable for display again this week.

Due to the July 4th holiday, no new Book Sense Bestseller List, and no Book Sense section, appear in this week's Bookselling This Week. Both will return in next week's edition.

Bestseller reporting will resume as usual on Saturday, July 8.
