Pass Christian Books Reopens on the Coast

Pass Christian Books, which was leveled in Hurricane Katrina, has finally moved back to downtown Pass Christian, Mississippi. After the 2005 storm, co-owners Rich Daley and Scott Naugle operated online and out of their homes, then moved to a temporary storefront on the outskirts of town. On April 1, the bookstore reopened near its former location.

Keebe Fitch of McIntyre's Fine Books in Pittsboro, North Carolina, this week invited the community to celebrate two decades of independent bookselling with cake and an all-day, 20-percent off sale. "The McIntyre's Anniversary party was a simple open house for a couple of hours on Monday, April 20, the actual anniversary of our opening in 1989," said store manager Jamie Fiocco.

Severely Damaged Flintridge Bookstore Bolstered by Community Support

Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse in La Canada, California, has been operating out of its back office since an out-of-control 18-wheeler barreled through a nearby intersection and into the store on April 1. In about 10 days, however, the bookstore, which has experienced a strong show of community support, will move to a trailer in the shopping center parking lot.

An out-of-control 18-wheeler barreled through an intersection in La Canada, California, on Wednesday, April 1, and smashed several vehicles before crashing into Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse. Two motorists were killed and at least a dozen people were injured. No one in the bookstore was harmed.

Next Chapter & Boswell Book Company Primed for Business

While all in the book industry mourn the closing of 82-year-old Milwaukee institution Harry W. Schwartz Bookshops last month, there is also cause to celebrate. Two of its former locations, acquired independently by two former Schwartz employees, reopen this week. On Wednesday, April 1, Lanora Hurley, former manager of Schwartz's Mequon store, opened Next Chapter Bookshop at that location, and on Friday, April 3, Daniel Goldin, former Schwartz general manager, will open Boswell Book Company at Schwartz's Downer Avenue location.
