Book Sense 76 Display Raffle Winners!

In late August, the American Booksellers Association announced that it would be holding a lottery to win a color inkjet printer for booksellers who dropped off photos of their current Book Sense 76 displays at the ABA booth at the fall regional trade shows. The prize at each was the printer that the association was using at its booth to demonstrate the ease with which booksellers can download and print the weekly Book Sense Bestseller lists.

Winter 2002-2003 Children's Book Sense 76 Top Ten Picks

Here's the first of the Winter Kids' 76, intended for use from December and into the new year. (The next Kids' 76 won't be until late spring 2003.) This is the result of great recommendations, as always, but the Top Ten was child's play to figure out, if you will!

This 76 will be in the November white box mailing, if we can get it off to, and back from, the printer in time. Stay tuned.

First Lady Laura Bush Fills White House Library Shelves With Titles From ABA

When the ABA Board presented a gift of books for the White House Library to First Lady Laura Bush on October 9, the Board members and senior staff each gave her titles to represent the more than 260 titles in the collection. The 17 titles presented were the 2002 Book Sense Book of the Year (BSBY) winners and honor books for fiction and nonfiction, the BSBY winners for Children's Literature and Children's Illustrated titles, and the BSBY winner and honor books in the Rediscovery category.

ABFFE Sues Justice Dept. Over Freedom of Information Request

The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) has joined three other free expression groups in suing the Department of Justice to learn how many subpoenas have been issued to bookstores, libraries, and newspapers under the USA Patriot Act. The suit was filed on October 24 and comes after a lack of response from the Department of Justice to a Freedom of Information Act (FIOA) request, filed in August, for the information.
