Forum Tour Heads to California in April

American Booksellers Association staff will be in San Francisco and Huntington Beach in early April for a Booksellers Forum and Education Program in conjunction with the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association's (NCIBA) Spring Gathering and the Southern California Booksellers Association (SCBA) Spring Meeting, respectively. All members of ABA and the regional associations are invited to attend.

Prospective Booksellers School at BEA: Registration Now Open

A four-day workshop for new and prospective booksellers will be offered from Tuesday, May 16, to Friday, May 19, in conjunction with this year's BookExpo America in Washington, D.C. The program, sponsored by the American Booksellers Association and facilitated by Donna Paz and Mark Kaufman of Paz & Associates, will explore strategies for opening and growing a profitable bookstore.

Senate Vote Clears Way for USA Patriot Act Renewal

On Wednesday, March 1, the Senate voted to clear the way for reauthorization of the USA Patriot Act, including a four-year extension of Section 215, which authorizes searches of bookstore and library records. As of press time, the Senate was expected to vote on reauthorization on Thursday, March 2, and the House is expected to vote on -- and pass -- the legislation on Tuesday, March 7, as reported by the Associated Press.

A Picks Deadline Reminder

Tomorrow, Friday, March 3, is the deadline for nominations for the May Book Sense Picks list.

And there is one more nomination deadline this month: Friday, March 24, is the deadline for the 2006 Summer Children's Picks.
