Senate Approves Patriot Act Reauthorization

After months of intense debate, on Thursday, March 2, the Senate voted 89 - 10 to reauthorize the expiring provisions of the USA Patriot Act, including a four-year extension of Section 215, which authorizes searches of bookstore and library records. It is expected that the House will vote on -- and pass -- the legislation on Tuesday, March 7, according to media reports. President Bush must sign the bill before March 10.

McMurtry Thanks Booksellers at the Academy Awards

At last night's 78th annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles, several of the Oscar-winning films were based on books -- Brokeback Mountain, Memoirs of a Geisha, Capote, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Constant Gardener, and Tsotsi. In his acceptance speech for Best Adapted Screenplay, Larry McMurtry acknowledged the role of books in film, and he offered a paean to "all the booksellers of the world."

Book Sense Welcomes New Publisher Partners

The Book Sense family of Publisher Partners has two new additions: Dorchester Publishing and Watson-Guptill Publications.

Watson-Guptill was founded in 1937 by Ernest Watson and Arthur Guptill. The company, which is now owned by VNU, includes five imprints -- Watson-Guptill, Amphoto Books, Billboard Books, Back Stage Books, and Whitney Library of Design -- with titles focusing on, among other things, fine art, lifestyle and design, cartooning, animation, crafts and graphic design, photography, and television.

The April Book Sense Picks and Notables Preview

Booksellers have spoken regarding the number-one title on the April Book Sense Picks list, and ... it's a tie.

When the tabulating was done, The Madonnas of Leningrad, a novel by Debra Dean (Morrow), and Saving the World, a novel by Julia Alvarez (Algonquin), had received an equal amount of support from independent booksellers in the Book Sense program.
