Betty & Rhett Jackson to Receive ABA Lifetime Achievement Award

The American Booksellers Association will honor longtime South Carolina independent booksellers and community leaders Betty and Rhett Jackson with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Celebration of Bookselling at this year's BookExpo America. The award will be presented to the Jacksons by fellow South Carolinian, and longtime friend, author Pat Conroy. The Jacksons opened their bookstore, The Happy Bookseller, in 1975 in Columbia, South Carolina.

Coming Your Way: New Book Sense Newsletter

Starting April 5, the American Booksellers Association will be sending every store participating in the Book Sense program the new monthly electronic Book Sense Marketing Newsletter. Encompassing both general and Book Sense-specific marketing ideas, the newsletter will arrive by e-mail on the first Wednesday of each month.

According to ABA Marketing Director Jill Perlstein, the Book Sense Marketing Newsletter aims to inspire display ideas and increase sales.

Make Your Place in History...

Independent booksellers in the Book Sense program still have time to nominate titles for the upcoming Book Sense History Top Ten, which has a deadline of March 31.

Once again, ABA is collaborating with The History Channel (THC), and this list will feature titles related to the American Revolution. In the words of Founding Father Benjamin Franklin, "Have you something to do tomorrow; do it today."

Senators Call for a Hearing on the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Project

In a letter dated March 21, Sen. Michael Enzi (R-WY) and Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) called on the Senate Committee on Finance to hold a hearing on S. 2152 and S. 2153, their respective streamlined sales and use tax legislation, that was referred to the committee for review. The letter was sent to Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-IA), the Senate Committee on Finance chairman, and Max Baucus (D-MT), the committee's ranking minority member.
