The American Booksellers Association has created a list of 28 notable titles on the importance of building and strengthening vibrant local economies.

Ranging from informative accounts about the true cost of chain mega-retailers to exposes about the fast food industry and the politics of globalization, all of the titles chosen were highlighted by independent booksellers as especially timely and significant.

New Gulf Coast Bookstore Set to Open

When Hurricane Katrina blew into Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, at about this time last year, it destroyed roads, homes, and businesses, and put many retailers out of business, including the popular independent bookstore, Bookends.

Cody's Books Acquired by Yohan, Inc.

On Wednesday, September 6, Cody's Books announced that it had been acquired by Yohan, Inc., a Tokyo-based bookseller, distributor, and publisher. Yohan -- which owns 18 bookstores in Japan, as well as the Tokyo-based IBC Publishing, Inc. and the Berkeley-based Stone Bridge Press -- purchased Cody's two stores, on Fourth Street in Berkeley and on Union Square in San Francisco.
