California Bills Aim to Help Communities Defend Against Wal-Mart

The past few years have seen an increase in the number of communities whose residents and businesses have banded together to fight against proposed big box development. In California, state Sen. Richard Alarcon (D-San Fernando Valley) has taken this battle one step further with two bills designed to assist local governments in their battles to keep big box retailers, such as Wal-Mart, out of their towns.

Captain Underpants and the Preposterous Plight of the Purple Potty People was ranked number one on the Children's Illustrated list, when it actually has the top spot on the Children's Interest Bestseller List for September 14. The number-one Children's Illustrated book for September 14 is Is There Really a Human Race? by Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell (illus.) (Joanna Cotler).

Pass Christian Books Hopes to Reopen Storefront in October

After nearly a year of conducting its bookselling business almost exclusively online due to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, Pass Christian Books in Pass Christian, Mississippi, is hoping to reopen a storefront in early October -- thanks to the help of a local resident, Scott Naugle told BTW.
