Rainy Day's Call to Action Draws a Reaction

Rainy Day Books of Fairway, Kansas, launched an e-mail campaign this week that seeks to keep a developer from bringing a Borders Books & Music to the new Gateway development in nearby Mission. A day after the e-mail went out, the developer, The Cameron Group of East Syracuse, New York, acknowledged it had previously talked with Borders about the development, but denied it has any deal to bring the chain bookstore to its new mix-use development.

A More Intimate NCIBA Show Garners Positive Feedback

The Northern California Independent Booksellers Association (NCIBA) 2006 Fall Trade Show was held on Friday, October 6, through Sunday, October 8, at the Oakland Convention Center and Oakland City Center Marriott in Oakland. This year's events included ABA and NCIBA educational programming, a keynote address by Michael Shuman, co-founder of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE), author breakfasts, the Fifth Annual Moveable Feast, and more.

Pirates and Tigers and Books, Oh My

Spirits were buoyant as the Great Lakes Booksellers Association (GLBA) "hoisted sales" at its fall trade show at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn, in Dearborn, Michigan, from Friday, October 6, through Sunday, October 8. Booksellers attended education sessions in record numbers, publishers reported brisk business with many orders, and numerous bandanas and eye patches, a nod to GLBA's pirate theme, were noted.
