Beam Me Down Under -- Tony Horwitz Travels the Pacific in Search of Captain James Cook

When Tony Horwitz stepped off the plane to Savage Island, he knew almost nothing about the place.

Bookstore Contends California Law Criminalizes Human Error

What should have been a simple transaction almost got Vroman's Bookstore Vice President/General Manager Karen Watkins arrested.

As Watkins tells it, on July 31, a group of three customers brought a box of 4" x 6" writing journals up to the register at Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena, California. The cashier began scanning the journals -- 11 journals priced at $4.95 each -- and gave the customers the total price.

There were two problems, however.

Prescription for Reading Program to Expand

ABA has announced that the successful Prescription for Reading program will be expanding to include a number of other organizations providing services for children. These include daycare centers, preschools, nursery schools, independent pharmacies, local Y's, day camps, senior citizen centers, or any organization that serves parents or grandparents of young children.
