On September 1, the Great Lakes Booksellers Association (GLBA) announced the winners of the 2004 Great Lakes Book Awards, which will be presented at a luncheon on Friday, October 8, during the GLBA fall trade show in Dearborn, Michigan. This year, the association split the children's award into two categories: picture book and chapter book.

The Northern California Independent Booksellers Association's (NCIBA) fall trade show will be held from Friday, October 1, to Sunday, October 3, at the Oakland Convention Center/Oakland Marriott in Oakland. Once again, this year's trade show will feature a stellar lineup of authors and a wide array of educational programming.

Jessica Stockton of Three Lives & Company in New York City was recently named the winner of the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association's contest that asked booksellers to write an essay that began with "I am a bookseller because …"

The Mountains and Plains Booksellers Association (MPBA) Fall Trade Show will be held from Thursday, September 16, through Sunday, September 19, at the Marriott Denver Tech Center in Denver. This year's show will once again feature educational panels and the Saturday Night Author Reception. And, in response to the popularity of last year's reception, a Friday Night Author Reception has been added.

In October 2002, the New England Booksellers Association (NEBA) launched Read Around New England (RANE), a unique, 10-day celebration designed to highlight New England's rich literary talent and diverse array of independent bookstores. A year later, the event was expanded to one month.

Outstanding New England Sales Rep to Be Recognized

On Tuesday, August 17, the New England Booksellers Association (NEBA) announced that John Muse was named the recipient of the 2004 Saul Gilman Award for outstanding New England Sales representative. Presented annually, the Gilman Awards were established in 1990 to recognize outstanding service to independent bookstores in New England by publishers' sales representatives. The award is accompanied by a $1,000 grant from NEBA to a literacy organization chosen by the winner.

Ted Kooser Named New Poet Laureate

Ted Kooser, a retired vice president of Lincoln Benefit Life insurance company in Nebraska, was named America's new poet laureate, as reported by the Washington Post.

The Mid-South Independent Booksellers Association (MSIBA) Fall Trade Show will be held from September 9 - 12 at the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans. Once again, this year's show will feature educational panels, a Friday night Casino Night, and a show that's chock full of authors.

The Southeast Booksellers Association (SEBA) Annual Fall Trade Show will be held this year at the Cobb Galleria Center, in Atlanta, Georgia, from September 10 - 12. Once again, SEBA's fall show will offer booksellers a plethora of educational programming and events.

The Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association (PNBA) Fall Tradeshow Northwest will be held September 10 - 12 at the Oregon Convention Center (OCC) and Red Lion Hotel at OCC in Portland, Oregon. This year's trade show promises a wide array of educational programs for booksellers, publishers, and authors, as well as Book & Author Breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday morning.

Kicking off the 2004 fall trade show season, the Mid-South Booksellers Association will hold its show September 9 - 12 in New Orleans, the Southeast Booksellers Association will hold its show September 10 - 12 in Atlanta, and the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association will hold its show September 10 - 12 in Portland, Oregon. Throughout September, October, and November, ABA's participation in each of the 10 regional bookseller associations' trade shows and events will include educational programming, as well as an exhibit on the trade show floor.
