Booksellers should report their sales for next week's Book Sense Bestseller List as they usually do; there will be no extension of the deadline for the Labor Day holiday.

As usual, the Book Sense Bestseller Lists will be e-mailed on Tuesday, September 5, and the printable PDF will be posted on ABA's trade website, BookWeb.org, on Wednesday afternoon.

There are two important Book Sense Picks nomination deadlines in the next fortnight:

The 2006 Quill Book Award finalists were announced on Tuesday, August 22, by NBC weatherman Al Roker. Voting to choose the winners, which will be announced during a ceremony on October 10 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, is open to consumers through September 30.

This week, BookSense.com Director Len Vlahos announced that the first phase of work to make BookSense.com websites ISBN-13 compatible has been completed. "Booksellers and consumers can now search for and find books with both 10- and 13-digit ISBNs," Vlahos said.

The Fall 2006 Book Sense Children's Picks list can now be previewed online. Independent bookstores with Book Sense will begin receiving the Children's Picks fliers, which are being mailed directly from the printer, during the week of August 28. Additional copies may be requested via e-mail to [email protected].

Independent bookstores with Book Sense once again have the opportunity to help fashion a Book Sense History Top Ten list compiled in conjunction with The History Channel (THC).

The new list will feature titles about empires throughout history, and will be released in October, when THC launches a weekly series, "Engineering an Empire," focusing on the architectural triumphs of great civilizations.

BookSense.com has scheduled down time on Monday, August 14, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. EST to enable staff to push new code that will make the database compliant with the 13-digit ISBN standard, which goes into effect on January 1, 2007.

During the down time, store websites and administrative pages will be replaced by a "Down for Maintenance" holding page that directs users to return later in the day.

Open Door Bookstore in Schenectady, New York, which offers an eclectic selection of books and gifts, has been serving a diverse community since 1971. The 3,000-square-foot store, owned by Janet and John Hutchison, is located on a pedestrian plaza in the downtown area and includes a gift gallery filled with a wide range of jewelry, pottery, glass, and fashion accessories.
