The Women's National Book Association (WNBA) has announced the winners of the 2004 Lucile Micheels Pannell Awards.

Balloting to choose the winners of the 2004 Book Sense Book of the Year Awards ends on Wednesday, May 12, the final day that ABA member bookstores may fax the ballot to KPMG, the association's accountant. All ABA member stores are eligible to vote, but only one ballot per store is allowed (the first form received from a store will be the official ballot). A ballot was sent to all stores in early April and is available in a downloadable PDF format by clicking here.

For the ninth year in a row, tens of thousands of book-lovers from all over Southern California gathered at the UCLA campus this past weekend for the annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. Book Sense -- the campaign that embodies the passion, personality, character, community, and knowledge of independent bookstores -- has announced the Best Books: The Best of Book Sense From the First Five Years. The list is the result of voting by independent booksellers across the country, who cast ballots for the titles they most enjoyed handselling over the past five years.

Edward P. Jones' The Known World (Amistad/HarperCollins) has been awarded the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Before it won the Pulitzer and the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction in early March, The Known World was recognized by independent booksellers as a Top Ten September/October 2003 Book Sense 76 Pick.

On Friday, March 26, at the Small Press Center's General Society Library, Morgan Entrekin, the president and publisher of Grove/Atlantic, Inc., received the Small Press Center's Ben Award (formerly known as the Poor Richard's Award) for his outstanding contribution to the field of independent publishing. The award was presented to Entrekin by Grove/Atlantic author, Francisco Goldman. Friday's Ben Award presentation inaugurated the 16th annual Small Press Book Fair, which took place on March 27 - 28.
