Chicago Site of Second ABA Spring Forum in Great Lakes Region

On Thursday, March 27, the American Booksellers Association will hold its second Booksellers Forum in the Great Lakes Region this spring. The forum and other ABA programming will be held in conjunction with the Great Lakes Booksellers Association (GLBA) Spring Meeting at the Transitions Learning Center in Chicago. In early February, approximately 30 booksellers attended an ABA Booksellers Forum at Weber's Inn in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

2003 Book Sense Book of the Year Finalists Announced

The American Booksellers Association has announced the finalists for the 2003 Book Sense Book of the Year Awards. The finalists in six categories -- Adult Fiction, Adult Nonfiction, Children's Literature, Children's Illustrated, Rediscovery, and Paperback -- are all Book Sense 76 titles nominated by ABA bookseller members as their handselling favorites. The awards will be announced at the Celebration of Bookselling, on Friday, May 30, during this year's BookExpo America, at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California.

Seller Beware: Lawyer Threatens to Sue Bookseller Over Incorrectly Marked $10 Gift Certificate

In Irvine, California, the purchase of an incorrectly marked $10 gift certificate might end up costing a bookseller a lot of money -- that is, if attorney Michael Geller has his way. He recently informed Irvine Sci-Tech Books in Irvine, California, of his intent to file suit because a $10 gift certificate that he purchased for his wife had an expiration date, which is illegal in California.

Atonement Takes Book Critics Award for Fiction

 

 

 

In a February 26 ceremony, held at the New School in New York City, the National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) announced the winners of its annual book awards. The Fiction prize was awarded to British author Ian McEwan for Atonement (Doubleday/Nan A. Talese). McEwan's novel was a Top Ten March/April 2002 Book Sense 76 pick.

Pacific Northwest Book Award Winners Announced

The Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association (PNBA) has announced the winners of its 2003 book awards. Independent booksellers from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska chose six titles by Northwest authors to receive special recognition.

The awards will be presented at the 37th PNBA Awards Banquet, which will be on March 15 at the PNBA's spring trade show in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
