ABA Forums in Idaho and New Mexico Cover New Strategic Plan and BTW

Last weekend was a busy one for the ABA. On Friday, March 22, booksellers gathered for a Booksellers Forum and financial seminar, held in conjunction with the Mountains and Plains Booksellers Association (MPBA) Spring Meeting, at the Marriott Downtown in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and on Saturday, March 23, over 35 booksellers attended a forum and Book Sense seminar, held in conjunction with the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Spring Trade Show, at the Coeur D’Alene Resort in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho.

2002 FAB Award Nominees Announced

Nominees for the seventh annual Firecracker Alternative Book (FAB) Awards, have been announced. The awards honor the best in alternative publishing in such categories as Sex, Drugs, Music, Graphic Novel, and Zine in addition to the traditional categories of Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poety. The deadline for votes is April 20, and awards will be presented at BookExpo America on May 3 in New York City.

'Indie Lit Revealed' at New York's Public Library

Today’s literary publishers are keepers of the written word, Dan Simon, publisher of Seven Stories Press (Noam Chomsky’s 9-11), told a crowd of more than 45 potential and present-day literary publishers and writers at the New York Public Library’s Berger Forum on Wednesday, March 20. And, he added, it’s unfortunate that today’s publishing environment dictates that something so normal as publishing quality books and stories is considered "radical."

Honey, They Shrunk the Book Review Section … Again

The downsizing of America’s newspaper book coverage continues. The Philadelphia Inquirer recently pared its Sunday book coverage to one page of reviews included in the newspaper’s arts and entertainment section. This is just the most recent in a series of reductions, according to Frank Wilson, who has edited the Inquirer’s book section since October 2000. At that time, Wilson told BTW, the book section was reduced from a six-page stand-alone section to a four-page stand-alone section.
