Teaching Customers More Than a Language

As the popularity of ABA's educational seminar "Creating Killer Events" at last month's BookExpo America demonstrated, successful independent booksellers are always looking for ways to strengthen their position as community centers through events with, and without, authors (see related story). At Manhattan's Rizzoli Bookstore, the challenge was recently met with a series of free Italian lessons that successfully reinforced the store's objective of serving as a cultural center for the neighborhood.

Full Steam Ahead for BookStream

Wholesaler BookStream, which opened in Poughkeepsie, New York, last December, is now running at full capacity, according to the company's vice president of sales and marketing, Maury McClelland. Noting that BookStream now distributes virtually all publishers and has been serving many independent bookstores along the East Coast and beyond for several months, he described the company's inventory as being at the proper level to be in a "competitive mode and a source for booksellers."

All ABA Members Asked to Participate in Legislative Day Follow-Up

The American Booksellers Association is encouraging members who participated in its first-ever Legislative Day at BookExpo America, as well as those who did not, to follow up with their senators and representatives to encourage support for issues of import to independent booksellers. For those who met with their senators, representatives, or congressional staff, ABA suggests a note of thanks for the meeting would provide the perfect opportunity to reiterate their concerns.
