Size Cap Fight Renewed in Montana's Ravalli County

In April, the county commissioners in Ravalli County, Montana, unanimously passed a regulation placing a size cap of 60,000 square feet on new retail outlets. The expectation was that the ordinance -- the brainchild of Russ Lawrence of Chapter One Book Store in Hamilton, Montana, and the Bitterroot Good Neighbor Coalition -- would keep a proposed Wal-Mart out of the county.

Now, it appears that the size cap ordinance is in jeopardy of being suspended.

Mystery Bookstore Creates a "Wow" Experience

The six-year-old I Love A Mystery specialty bookstore in Mission, Kansas, tripled its square footage when owner Karen Spengler purchased a building on a main street and relocated the store earlier this year. The store's move to the new, 2,700-square-foot location on a more traveled street, which was executed without a hitch, has been a positive step for all -- customers, staff, and other local businesses.

The Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) held its fourth annual conference, "Creating Sustainable Communities," in Burlington, Vermont, from Thursday, June 8, through Saturday, June 10. The event attracted people from various walks of life, including farmers, entrepreneurs, economists, authors, and a number of independent booksellers.

Great Lakes and Midwest Booksellers Join Forces for ShopTalk

The Harry W. Schwartz Bookshop in Shorewood, Wisconsin, will host a ShopTalk, co-sponsored by the Great Lakes Booksellers Association (GLBA) and the Midwest Booksellers Association (MBA), on June 22. The far-reaching program will include a presentation by Schwartz staff on the store's innovative marketing initiatives, lunch with Vintage author Patrick Somerville, and sessions on the upcoming switch to 13-digit ISBNs, as well as information about The Spoken Word, the weekly National Public Radio program backed by eight regional bookseller associations.
