Pulitzer Winners Announced

The 91st annual winners of the 2007 Pulitzer Prizes in Journalism, Letters, Drama, and Music were announced on Monday, April 16, by Columbia University. This year's fiction winner is The Road by Cormac McCarthy (Knopf) -- a 2007 Book Sense Book of the Year Honor Book, a 2006 October Book Sense Notable, the current Oprah Book Club Pick, and a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist.

Kurt Vonnegut Dies at 84

Kurt Vonnegut, considered a key figure in 20th-century American literature, died April 11 at 84. He had suffered brain injuries resulting from a recent fall at his Manhattan home, said his wife, photographer Jill Krementz. Vonnegut's more than a dozen books, short stories, essays, and plays, including Slaughterhouse-Five, Cat's Cradle, and most recently A Man Without a Country -- offered elements of social commentary, science fiction, and autobiography via dark humor and satire.

Wiley Marks Its Bicentennial With Sponsorship of MetroCards for Hotel ABA Guests

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of John Wiley & Sons, Inc., as well as Frommer's 50th, and to make travel between Hotel ABA, the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Jacob Javits Center that much easier, Wiley will be sponsoring New York City subway MetroCards for all Hotel-ABA registered guests. The cards will be pre-loaded and available to booksellers at the welcome desk at Hotel ABA.

New Milford Downtown Keeps Notable Independent Businesses

During one March week in New Milford, Connecticut, two neighboring downtown independent businesses were spared closure. One is the town's only independent bookstore. The other is the landmark Bank Street Theater, an Art Deco movie house built during the silent film era.
