Online Sales Soar for Some Over Black Friday Weekend

According to the second installment of the 2003 eHoliday Mood Study, conducted by Shop.org and BizRate.com, over half of retailers surveyed saw sales increase more than 25 percent over last year for the Black Friday weekend. Additionally, 71 percent of online retailers said that they are feeling optimistic about the holiday season, up four percent from two weeks ago.

With the Book Sense Gift Card Program in full swing, and the holidays upon us, booksellers participating in the gift card program should note these important announcements regarding reordering cards. Booksellers can now restock their Book Sense Gift Cards and the coordinating presenters at a newly launched web site: booksenseorders.givex.com. Booksellers need to use the same login and password, which was provided by Givex, that they use to access store.givex.com.

Booksellers, Publishers, and Other Book Industry Groups Asked to Sign Statement Supporting Legislation to Protect Customer Privacy

The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) is asking all ABA bookstore members to add their store names to the list of 84 bookstores from across the country that have already endorsed the Book and Library Community Statement Supporting The Freedom to Read Protection Act (H.R. 1157); The Library and Bookseller Protection Act (S. 1158); and The Library, Bookseller, and Personal Data Privacy Act (S. 1507).

Hoynes Takes a Look Back & Makes a Request for the Future

Michael Hoynes, ABA's marketing officer, who helped the association build Book Sense into a vibrant national marketing program with over 1,200 participating booksellers, will be leaving ABA at the year's end. "I thought it was probably a three-year assignment, but it just ended up being five," Hoynes told BTW at ABA's Tarrytown, New York headquarters.
