Sales Floor Manager at Bookshop Santa Cruz   

Bookshop Santa Cruz is seeking a Floor Manager candidate to lead and manage our supervisor and floor staff team. Bookshop Santa Cruz is a large, independent bookstore located in the heart of Downtown Santa Cruz, California since 1966. Be at the center of Bookshop’s life, the sales floor, and work with customers and staff who want to create a strong literary culture. The position includes 16 “off-floor” hours for scheduling and other managerial tasks, plus 24 hours working on the sales floor as supervisor/manager. The rate of pay is for all hours. Weekend and evening availability is required. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Writing the weekly schedules and maintaining daily templates for the store, ensuring breaks/meal times, and working to ensure the schedule allows the store to run smoothly.
  • Hiring, training, and managing booksellers and promoting to create strong supervisors.
  • Working closely with the GM and management team to develop strategies and opportunities to meet the needs of the store,  our customers, and our staff.
  • Opening/closing the store as needed, scheduling, coordinating, and actively supervising the work that needs to be done on each shift (desks, section work, customer calls, etc.).
  • Customer service and relations, including dealing with questions, problems, shoplifters, et al. Ensuring that the store maintains an excellent level of customer service. Develop, maintain, and teach a Bookshop customer service standard.
  • Providing positive acknowledgment and constructive feedback to booksellers. 

Qualifications:

  • Experience in scheduling and supervising a large staff
  • Proven leadership skills including good working relationships with co-workers
  • Integrity and professionalism in all aspects of work
  • Organized, efficient, and detail-oriented. Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Excellent communication skills including conflict resolution
  • Retail and supervisorial experience required
  • Proficiency with Google Docs and the Microsoft suite 

Rate of Pay: $25.00/hour. Includes options for PTO, dental, vision, and life insurance, plus free advanced reading copies and a generous store discount.

Bookshop staff is represented by the Communication Workers of America Union. This position is not in the bargaining unit and will be responsible for implementing and maintaining our union contract.
